Can strategy games really work on touch?

Can strategy games really work on touch?

March 23, 2026 · Lena Vogt

For years the team assumed real-time strategy just doesn't translate to touchscreens. Too many units, too little precision, too much fiddling. Then Tide Command changed our minds.

The trick is designing around touch instead of porting a mouse layout onto it. Tide Command uses drag gestures to group and move squads, and keeps the unit count low enough that you're never overwhelmed.

The tide mechanic — where the sea reshapes the map every couple of minutes — also gives you natural pauses to reassess. That rhythm fits touch play far better than the frantic clicking of desktop RTS.

It's not going to replace your PC strategy nights, but it proves the genre can feel at home on a phone when someone bothers to design for it.
